How do you go about choosing who you work with?
Shakespeare Creative has been up and running for over a year now. As a Creative Agency, we work with a large number of companies and freelancers who provide a smorgasbord of services. We use our contact book as well as LinkedIN and Fiverr. So, how do we actually choose who we work with, and why?
The amount of talent out there, coupled with the ever growing advancement in technology, means that there are an abundance of great creative services around. Whether you are creating visual graphics, video content, audio production etc. Obviously, the first thing you look for is; examples of their work. Evidence that they can do what they claim to do.
After I’ve found a person or business that has demonstrated great skill in content creation, I reach out. From that point onward, it’s all about communication, efficiency and (and I hate to say this) likability.
Being nice and genuine might be the most underrated trait that doesn’t appear on a CV.
Over the last year, we have nurtured great relationships with key suppliers. We have created some amazing pieces of content for various clients. Do I believe there are better content creators out there? Maybe. Do I think there are worse creatives out there? Definitely. But what I’ve learnt that sets people apart, is simply this. Being nice, communicative, and authentic is essential.
Our CV’s generally prioritises our academic and industry achievements. Claims of being great to work with, or “really passionate” are deemed to be “wishy washy” and generic. Writing that on a CV could be pointless, as the proof of it is more often than not in the pudding, once someone has been employed. But the reality, when we stop and think about it, is that those who stand out are (certainly) good at their job, but importantly are just really good to work with.
Being nice is underrated. It may sound basic, but is it wrong to say that I just want to work with people I like, people that are trustworthy and honest? You can learn the skills. You can utilise technology. But being a good person to work with, is perhaps the most important thing to have in your arsenal.
What happens to those who are good to work with, is they get talked about. Recommendations and promotions follow. Word of mouth is still the best form of marketing there is, regardless of what people say. If someone I like and respect recommends a tv show or film they think I’d like, I’m VERY likely to watch it. Same goes for employing someone.
